Let’s face it. The winter season can be a tricky time for staying in shape. The holiday season brings a wealth of delectable, fatty foods, and the cold weather can make it difficult to get to the gym every day. If you need a little extra motivation, it may just be time to incorporate some fun new workouts. Fitness classes are great for staying on target, because they take place in an exciting social environment that eliminates the usual monotony of exercising.

Here are some ideas for classes to get you started:

Step: Step aerobics is one of the classic gym workouts, but it still holds up as well as ever. With its rapid pace and high intensity movements, step is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Step classes also present great opportunities for meeting new people.

Spin: Indoor cycling has become one of the more popular group workouts in recent years, as it not only has the potential to burn calories, but it also strengthens muscles and tones the lower body. The workout is performed on stationary bicycles, and involves routines that simulate outdoor riding conditions, complete with different terrains and intervals. Indoor cycling can be highly challenging, and highly rewarding.

Pilates: The Pilates system has been around for nearly a century, but in recent years, it has experienced a huge surge in popularity. The routine helps to build flexibility, muscle strength and endurance in almost all major muscle groups, and it also builds a strong core. This workout uses a variety of different apparatus to challenge the body, while also demanding a great deal of focus.

Kickboxing: If you want to try a high-intensity workout that will help you to shed pounds, build strength and possibly even equip you with some great self-defense moves, kickboxing is the class for you. More and more gyms are offering kickboxing and turbo kickboxing classes for people who really like to move. In some ways, it’s like step aerobics taken to the next level.
